IM Debate: Why Karl Rove Furor Touched a Nerve
November 10th, 2012There is something about what happened with Karl Rove in the Fox News studio on Election Night that has sparked an incredible public reaction. In their latest IM debate, Lauren Ashburn and Howard Kurtz try to figure out why.
Howie: Our readers are going crazy over our stories and video on Karl Rove going rogue over at Fox. Why has this touched such a nerve?
Lauren: Because you look handsome?
Howie: Okay, but besides that.
Lauren: Seriously, part of it has to do with Fox-haters. There are so many of them that when a prominent prognosticator like Rove bucks his own network, people can’t get enough.
Howie: I’m sure that’s part of it. Part of the country loves Fox and part of the country can’t stand it. Plus all the people still angry at Bush’s architect. But I think it goes deeper than that.
Lauren: People are watching a man who has sunk his life’s work into electing Mitt Romney suffer a crushing defeat.
Howie: So it’s basically schadenfreude?
Lauren: No. It’s like watching a train wreck.
David Petraeus’ Abrupt Exit: Sometimes An Affair Is Just An Affair
November 9th, 2012The resignation of David Petraeus as director of Central Intelligence sparked a flurry of rumors across Washington this afternoon–some of it echoed on social media sites.
Petraeus’s resignation, which was caused by his admission of an extramarital affair, caused all sorts of speculation that this was just some sort of coverup. After all, the former four-star general was due to testify before Congress next week on the death of four American diplomats in Libya, and the chatter said this was all an elaborate excuse to avoid that. It wasn’t.
The affair was discovered in the midst of an unrelated FBI investigation, according to a report in Newsmax.
The timing, of course, was a bit curious, the Friday afternoon immediately after a presidential election–and after Barack Obama had made his first televised statement about his fiscal plans.
Vanishing Media: Mitt Romney’s Fast Fade
November 9th, 2012Willard Mitt Romney stood on the verge of ultimate power as leader of the free world. Now, just moments later, he is about to vanish from the political stage. Perhaps forever.
So what’s a guy to do when booted from the national spotlight without a job? Well, if you’re Romney, you don’t have to do a whole hell of a lot. His millions spare him from worrying about putting food on the table.
In six months, will he be relegated to a mere historical footnote?
Historian Douglas Brinkley, author of the bestselling book Cronkite, argues that life in politics is over for the man who could have been president. “There is no such thing as a Romney Republican,” Brinkley says. The former Massachusetts governor’s move to the center and his flip-flopping on such issues as abortion, health care, and tax cuts during the campaign left many wondering just exactly what he stands for. “He’s not going to be beloved by the conservative movement. Not when you lose when unemployment is 7.9 percent.”
