Possible Twitter Account Of Suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Found

Ben Jacobs | April 19th, 2013

Even suspected terrorists use Twitter.

Adrian Chen at Gawker has identified what appears to be the Twitter account of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, “the white hat suspect” in the Boston Marathon attacks.

Tsarnaev, who used the handle @J_tsar, had a social media account that, in many ways, seemed normal for a 19-year-old. In the past week, he tweeted comments like “I’m a stress free kind of guy” and quoted a lyric from Eminem from the hip hop song “Forget About Dre” from Dr. Dre’s album The Chronic 2001, “Nowadays everybody wanna talk like they got somethin to say but nothin comes out when they move their lips; just a bunch of gibberish.”

But Tsarneav also has tweeted out thoughts that seem more disturbing in retrospect like “I killed Abe Lincoln during my two hour nap #intensedream” and “Idk why it’s hard for many of you to accept that 9/11 was an inside job, I mean I guess fuck the facts y’all are some real

A Bostonian’s Plea to the Media: Report Well

David Riemer | April 19th, 2013

Local news outlets in Boston are frenzied this morning after the fatal shooting of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) police officer and an explosive-strewn car chase which tore through Watertown, MA late last night. Police are reporting that the same two FBI-identified suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings carjacked a man from the MIT area, leading law enforcement personnel on a chase into the suburbs which ended in the reported death of one of the suspects. State and federal law enforcement have coalesced in Watertown for a massive manhunt for the remaining Boston Marathon bombing suspect, identified as 19 year old Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev of Cambridge.

Channel 7 is sensationalist. Cameras shake and wiggle across the screen. The same blurry pictures of the two suspects interlude the vacuous moments. As of 8:38AM this morning, the police have guns pointed at a Watertown residence as a reporter speculates wildly, trying to fill the suspenseful seconds with nervous rabble about the suspect’s background. He is an accomplished medical student. He has a driver’s license.

Is all this helping? My heart rate’s up. I’m glued to the screen. But really all I can think of is what will happen if this man is not taken alive.

The New York Post Blows It Again

Ben Jacobs | April 18th, 2013

The New York Post has been practicing a novel form of journalism in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings.

First, with an unnamed Saudi on Monday afternoon, and then, with Thursday morning’s cover story identifying two young men in the crowd on Boylston Street as possible suspects, the New York tabloid seems to be trying to find the culprits via process of elimination. While it’s unclear how long the Post will continue this process—-after all, the city of Boston has approximately 625,000 people and the Post could accuse one of being the bomber every day for the next 1712 years without finding the perpetrator—it’s already been deeply embarrassing for the Rupert Murdoch owned paper, which has now been profoundly wrong twice on the biggest story of the year.

The Post though is trying to avoid the blame. In a statement to Salon, editor Col Allen said:

We stand by our story. The image was emailed to law enforcement agencies yesterday afternoon seeking information about these men, as our story reported. We did not identify them as suspects.
